Home Education Learning Sessions
Enjoy learning history and skills with your children by booking a place on our Home Education Learning Sessions! These two-hour afternoon sessions are great for hands-on learning with our expert team, covering a variety of time periods and age groups.
Each session includes 3 hours of free parking (make sure you pick up a permit at the front desk). Children must have a responsible adult with them for the duration of the session and when exploring the museum.
No prior knowledge required. Age groups are recommended based on the topic, but you know your own child’s abilities and sensitivities best.
All dates are Thursdays. More information on individual sessions below:
10 Sept 2026: Treasure (ages 6-10 years)
What is treasure? Have a go at metal detecting, explore what is treasure and the role of museums in preserving the past with a particular focus on the Great Baddow Coin Hoard.
5 Nov 2026: WWII (ages 10-14 years)
What was it like in Chelmsford during World War II? Explore why Chelmsford was a target for German bombers and what life was like for civilians including evacuation, rationing and surviving bombings.
14 Jan 2027: Stone Age (ages 6-10 years)
Could you survive the Stone Age? Have a go at a range of different Stone Age skills and discover if you are as creative as a prehistoric person.
11 March 2027: Inventors and Innovators (ages 10-14 years)
A close look at our local industrial past focusing on problem solvers and creators in Chelmsford.
20 May 2027: Toys through time (ages 6-10 years)
What was it like being a child in Victorian England? What did you play with? Explore who lived in Oaklands House before it was a museum and what life was like for the family through some of their favourite toys.
10 June 2027: Anglo-Saxons (ages 10-14 years)
Was this period of history really the Dark Ages? Explore Anglo-Saxon community, art and beliefs through hands on activities and a look at the Broomfield Anglo-Saxon Princely burial, archaeology on our doorstep on a par with the treasures of Sutton Hoo.
8 July 2027: Marconi (ages 6-10 years)
Discover the determination, perseverance, and collaboration that saw Marconi’s ideas save the lives of 705 people on the Titanic and go on to change the world.
